Public health seminars

The Centre for Health Promotion has provided a program of free health seminars for the public since 1997.  This relates to the CHP's goal of increasing community access to quality health information. Sessions aim to improve consumers' capacity to make informed choices about their health and health care, and that of their families. Providing quality information is an important part of health care services.

The number of seminars delivered has varied from 3-8 per year and are usually held in the lecture theatre of the Women's and Children's Hospital. Seminars regulary attract about 100 participants from a wide range of metropolitan areas.

Topics cover a range of children, youth and women’s health issues, with those about childbirth, caring for babies, and specific health issues such as Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome and Menopause being popular. Speakers are usually CYWHS staff members, with 2-3 speakers per session. A consumer also presents where possible.

Feedback from participants typically indicates that about 75% believe they have improved knowledge and understanding, and intend to take action as a result of what they have heard.
